I've always loved The Great Brain, and enjoy all of the books in the series. I think the first one is probably the best, but all the books maintain the quality and entertainment of the first. I loved them as a kid, and I still enjoy reading them now. The books have a great view of the West in its early days, excellent characters, and deft writing.
"That's pulp!" It's a claim heard more than once in this impressive, but uneven meta-version of mid-20th Century adventure stories. H.P. Lovecraft, zombies, communists, death gods, and a pre-Scientology L. Ron Hubbard all make an appearance. And yet the book doesn't really get going until the halfway point. That's an awfully long time to wait for a cliffhanger. Recommended for fans of the genre.
This is really a 2 1/2....I enjoyed parts of the book, but the writing got a little bogged down. A little too flowery for my tastes. The battle descriptions were the best part of the book.
